Answer to Question 1

Main advantage: plant roots are exposed to adequate supplies of water, oxygen, and
nutrients.
Other advantages:
Low capital cost plus simplicity of installation and operation
 Precise control of nutrition
Eliminates the need for soil sterilization and preparation
 Quick turnaround between crops
Reduction in transplanting shock by use of growing cubes and preheating the
nutrient solution to provide optimal root temperatures
It is easy to adjust the nutrient solution formulation and use systemic insecticides
and fungicides in the nutrient solution
Potential energy savings by keeping the greenhouse temperature lower than normal
levels due to maintenance of optimal root temperatures
Eliminates water stress in plants between irrigation cycles by continuous watering
Conservation of water by using a cyclic system

Answer to Question 2
