The key steps in the ethylene biosynthetic pathway are as follows:
S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) is converted to 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic
acid (ACC) via the enzyme ACC synthase. ACC has two fates:
 The conversion to malonyl ACC (which is an inactive end product) via the enzyme
ACC N-malonyltransferase (ACC-NMtase)
 The conversion to ethylene via the enzyme ACC oxidase
