Answer to Question 1

Toxoplasmosis is a disease produced by infection of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It can be carried by
several different animal species but is usually spread to humans through cat feces or contaminated litter.
Pregnant women should not handle cat litter boxes because toxoplasmosis can cause miscarriage, premature
births, and blindness in the unborn child.

Answer to Question 2

Children and the elderly are at a greater risk because they have a lower resistance to some of the disease-causing
organisms. Children are also at risk because they play with animals and play in areas that can become
contaminated by animals.
