Answer to Question 1

In southern regions of the United States, grapevines are planted in the fall as soon as
they be-come dormant. North of Arkansas, Tennessee, and Virginia, vines are planted in
early spring. The vines are planted at the same depth at which they grew in the nursery.
The plants are spaced 8 to 10 feet apart in the row, with the rows about 10 feet apart.
The plants are placed directly under the trellis wire. Do not allow roots to dry out during
the planting procedure. Immediately after planting, prune to a single stem with two or
three buds remaining.

Answer to Question 2

Grapes grow well in most soil types, but prefer a deep, fertile, well-drained loamy soil
with a moderate amount of organic matter is best. A pH range from 5.5 to 7.0 is
satisfactory. Perform a soil test and add phosphorus or potash fertilizer as needed.
Before planting, plow deeply and disc harrow.
