Answer to Question 1

Test the soil and then adjust the soil pH or acidity as needed 6 months before planting by
mixing either lime, sulfur, or iron sulfate into the soil, depending on the test results. If
the soil tests low in phosphorus or potash, these elements should also be plowed down
or mixed into the soil before planting. Use a soil test to determine how much fertilizer is
needed. To fertilize plants, broadcast around the plant to within 6 inches of the plant and
out as far as the roots extend (1 foot or more beyond the spread of the outer branches).
Older plant roots extend farther out than younger plants. New shoot growth of 14 to 18
inches indicates proper fertilizer use.

Answer to Question 2

Insect pests that are harmful to blueberries include scale insects, plum curculio, fruit
worms, leaf hoppers, and blueberry maggots.
