Answer to Question 1

The four categories of blueberries are highbush, lowbush, half-high blueberries, and
rabbiteye. The highbush and rabbiteye blueberries varieties are used most often in
commercial production.

Answer to Question 2

For commercial operations, hand weeding is too expensive a method to use in
strawberry- production. The combination of mechanical cultivation and use of weed
killers is the most practical method. Black plastic mulch is effective in controlling weeds,
and it also conserves- moisture and helps to control fruit rot. In California, soil
fumigation before planting is used to control weeds and nematodes.

Answer to Question 3

When planting, use disease resistant varieties when possible. Avoid soils infested with
red stele root rot or areas below infected fields where water may wash the disease into
the planting site. Also avoid planting in soil where tomatoes, potatoes, or peppers have
been grown recently, because verticillium wilt is probably present. If this is the case,
plant only a disease-resistant variety. It is also necessary to spray for good disease and
insect control and mulch to keep down weed growth.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
