on lilacs and maples; renewal pruning, used on flowering trees; and root pruning, used
on deciduous trees

 Change the size or proportion of the plant.
 Develop a special form or shape.
 Remove wilted or dead flowers and seed pods.
 Rejuvenate a declining plant.
