Answer to Question 1

Plant diseases are not quite as easy to control with IPM as insects. Good sanitation to
prevent carryover of fungus spores, early identification, and prompt control can greatly
reduce the need for regular preventive sprays. Disease-resistant varieties can also
reduce or eliminate the need for chemical control of some diseases

Answer to Question 2

Student answers may vary, but suggestions include protecting the environment and
drinking water from poisonous chemicals, increasing insect resistances to chemical
pesticides, the cancer-causing or other ill effects of many pesticides on humans and
animals, and EPA restrictions are making fewer chemical pesticides available

Answer to Question 3

Some crops that might be grown in a 3- or 4-year rotation for soil disease control include
tomatoes, eggplant, and potatoes.
