Answer to Question 1

Grafting tomatoes is important because it increases tomato yields, improves plant
resistance to soil-borne pests, and increases environmental tolerance. Ideas of possible
disadvantages to tomato grafting will vary.

Answer to Question 2

Students should provide at least three of the following methods of grafting are: whip or
tongue graft, side veneer graft, cleft graft, and stenting. The whip or tongue graft is used
mainly for fruit trees. The side veneer graft is used for evergreens, such as the blue
Colorado spruce. The cleft graft is also used for fruit trees and used for topworking trees
or grafting to a rootstock that is considerably larger than the scion. Stenting is used
frequently with roses.
