East-facing patio will be warm and sunny in the morning and cool and shady in the afternoon

West-facing patio will be cool and shady in the morning and warm and sunny in the afternoon.
South-facing patio will be sunny and warm all day for almost all year round. North-facing patio will be cool and shady all day for most of the year.

A foundation planting is a planting of shrubs along the front wall of a house. A foundation planting is used if the house has a high, unsightly foundation that needs to be obscured. (Answers to part two of the question regarding shrub selection will vary.
