Answer to Question 1

The most serious would probably be Pythium and Rhizoctonia diseases in new seedings or established turf. Other less important diseases might include certain Helminthosporium diseases, red thread, summer patch and necrotic ring spot, take-all patch, southern blight, downy mildew or yellow tuft, spring dead spot, bermudagrass decline, snow molds, and slime molds.

Answer to Question 2

There are two basic objectives with the application of cultural controls to manage weeds. First, cultural operations are selected to enhance the conditions for optimum turf growth. Any mechanism that increases the turf's competitiveness should have the opposite effect on weeds. Secondly, through this competition, the weeds should be reduced to a weakened state providing easier, direct control with herbicides.
