Specific maladies were noted when the diet did not include fruits, vegetables, parts of plants, or sufficient animal products.

Inclusion of different dietary components improved health and production.

Specific experiments were done to identify required nutrients.

Nutrients are the chemicals required by the body to sustain life; essential nutrients cannot be synthesized by the body. Primary nutrients include glucose, amino acids, essential fatty acids, other fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
