Low corn and wheat prices as a result of production increases from the green revolution made it economically feasible to produce high quantities of meat at low cost from confined pigs and chickens and feedlot cattle. In addition, free trade coupled with expanding beef production from developing countries greatly increased global supplies of beef, depressing prices.
