Metformin (Glucophage) is contraindicated for clients with renal insufficiency and clients over age 80. It is a biguanide that improves insulin sensitivity by enhancing glucose uptake and use of the muscles. It rarely causes hypoglycemia. Additional beneficial effects include mild weight loss and improved lipid profiles in clients with high lipid levels.

Another name for dorsal recumbent is supine or the back-lying position. Prone is the face-down position. Lateral is a side-lying position. Sims' is a semiprone position.
