Although care may be delegated to nurse associates for shifts when the primary nurse is not in attendance, the primary nurse maintains responsibility for total patient care 24 hours a day.

Contusions are bruises of the soft tissue with no break in the skin surface. A strain is a stretch injury involving the muscles, tendons, or ligaments. A sprain involves tearing of muscle fibers, tendons, or ligaments around a joint. Dehiscense refers to the splitting of a surgical wound.
