Answer to Question 1

A
A heparin or saline lock provides continuous access to venous circulation, eliminating the need for a continuous IV and increasing a patient's mobility. When giving an IV push medication into a continuous infusion line, the nurse should pinch the IV tubing above the injection port while slowly giving the medication. This will prevent the medication from going up into the bag instead of into the patient. When giving IV piggyback medications, the primary solution should be lower than the secondary solution. It is not necessary for the nurse to wear gloves when providing an IV piggyback medication.

Answer to Question 2

D
Restraints are legal only if they are necessary to protect the patient or others from harm. If a competent patient refuses to follow orders and the nurse uses restraints, the nurse can be charged with false imprisonment and/or assault and battery. In an emergency situation when a patient becomes violent and is in imminent danger of harming self or others, the nurse may apply restraints and then immediately obtain an order from the physician.
