Any type of threat, whether it be real, imagined, actual, or anticipated, may challenge a person's self-concept. Illness evokes anxiety in most people and anxiety can result in illness. Some illnesses may impair self-concept. There is a social stigma on certain types of illnesses such as mental illness, cancer, and AIDS. Compromised health status that requires surgery can lead to psychological alterations including an impaired body image.
