Otitis externa, also called swimmer's ear, generally is a bacterial infection of the external ear canal. Mastoiditis, inflammation of the mastoid bone, is most often the result of chronic bacterial otitis media. Antibiotics are prescribed for both infections.

Otitis media, an inflammation of the middle ear, is often the cause of temporary conductive hearing loss. Otitis media occurs more frequently in children than in adults. Antibiotics are usually the medication of choice. Analgesics may be prescribed to control pain.
