Several medications are approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men: alendronate sodium (Fosamax) also with vitamin D3, risedronate (Actonel) also with calcium, and zoledronic acid (Reclast). Ibandronate (Boniva) is used for prevention and treatment in postmenopausal women only.
