Nurses should become familiar with different types of grief so they can recognize the complexity of feelings associated with grief. Then these nurses can assist mourners in an appropriate way by encouraging them to experience their feelings to the fullest so they can work through these feelings and begin the healing process.

Uncomplicated or normal grief follows a significant loss in a predictable course, ending when the lost object is surrendered and the survivor resumes normal life responsibilities.
