Many patients feel guilt, embarrassment, and anxiety about contracting an STI; this can cause them to defer care until the problem becomes severe. Although knowledge about the severity of STIs may be insufficient, this should not deter seeking care. Regardless of lifestyle, STIs should be treated immediately to prevent further transmission. The role of the health care provider is to establish a trusting relationship. A person may be open to discussing health promotion behaviors but may still be hesitant to discuss STIs.
