A The fact that the patient's brother had a tonsillectomy at 11 years of age does not place the patient at risk for surgery.
B The patient who smokes is at greater risk for postoperative pulmonary complications than is a nonsmoker.
C The presence of an IV infusion does not place the patient at risk for surgery. An IV should be in place for surgery, so access is available to administer medications, fluids, or blood products if necessary. Keeping the patient well hydrated will help prevent postoperative thrombophlebitis.
D A history of employment as a computer programmer does not make the patient a surgical risk.
