Ideally, the parents provide most of the care during hospitalizations. Close attachment to the primary caregivers, most often parents, usually occurs by this age. Infants seek out these persons for support and comfort during times of stress. By 8 months, most infants are able to differentiate a stranger from a familiar person and respond differently to the two.
