When assessing a client's axillary temperature with a glass thermometer, the thermometer should be left in place for two to three minutes.
The thermometer should be held at the opposite end of the bulb.
The thermometer should be covered with a plastic sheath when in use, and after use, the plastic sheath is discarded. If the thermometer requires cleaning, the nurse should not use hot water, as it could cause the thermometer to break.
The parent, not the child, should hold the thermometer. A young client may drop the thermome-ter, creating a mercury spill.

If a patient is undergoing major surgery such as a procedure on the heart, a stay in the hospital and specifically in the intensive care unit is required to monitor for potential risks to well-being. This patient would require more care than can be provided on a medical-surgical unit. It is not appropriate for this type of patient to go home after the procedure or to stay in an extended stay area of an ambulatory surgery area because of the complexity and associated risks.
