When a patient has an ostomy, the location of the ostomy determines the type of diet needed for regular evacuation. Initially place ostomy patients on low-fiber diets to avoid stoma obstruction. Teach the patient to avoid foods that cause blockage, such as oranges, apples with tough skins, corn, and popcorn.
