Always discard the first sample at the beginning of the collection period. The 24-hour collection period begins after you throw away the first specimen. The patient then collects all urine voided in 24 hours.

Review with the patient his or her perceptions about success at meeting the expectations of care. Do you feel less nauseous? is a question to ask if the patient's expectations revolve around symptom management.
