Securing the chest tube to the chest tube dressing helps to prevent dislocation or removal of the chest tube and is an appropriate nursing action. A lack of bubbling in the water seal chamber indicates air is no longer being evacuated, so it is an appropriate nursing assessment. Milking the chest tube, or squeezing it from the patient to the drainage collection device, is not an evidence-based practice and should not be done. Seeing a nurse doing this would indicate the need for corrective action, which should not be provided by a student.

A transactional leader would direct everyone to play a part in resuscitating the patient, and would be the most effective leadership style in this scenario. During a code, everyone must know his function. There is no time for a democratic discussion, so a democratic leadership style would not be the most appropriate one. When directing a code, a nurse cannot stand back and be nonparticipative, so a laissez-faire approach would not be effective. There is no time to inspire and motivate followers during a code, so the transformational leadership style would not be the most effective.
