Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Washing the ear with a washcloth and soap is sufficient in most patients. If the patient has a buildup of wax, or cerumen, the health care provider may order special oil drops to soften the wax before irrigating the ear canal. Do not try to remove the wax using a cotton-tipped applicator because this can push the wax farther into the ear canal. Caution patients to never insert anything sharp into the ear, such as bobby pins. Sharp objects can rupture the tympanic membrane.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
If a lens is dropped, do the following: (1) moisten a finger with the lens solution, and then gently touch the lens with the moistened finger to pick it up. (2) Clean, rinse, and disinfect the lens to avoid a potential eye infection from any microorganisms that might have adhered to the lens. The contact lens does not need to be discarded.
