Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
The body tries to compensate for excess carbon dioxide (seen in acidosis) by increasing the rate and depth of respirations to blow off the carbon dioxide.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
A pulse of 42 beats/min is considered bradycardia and the patient should be assessed first because perfusion could be compromised. The pain rating is not extreme and should be considered in light of the patient's pain goals. The blood pressure and respiratory rate are normal.
