The four stages of general anesthesia are induction (depresses the cortical areas of the brain), ex-citement (begins with loss of consciousness), surgical anesthesia (neurologic depression occurs, no blink or gag reflex), and anesthetic overdose (evidenced by apnea and cardiovascular col-lapse).

ANS: D
To one degree or another, BZDs rely on central nervous system (CNS) depression to relieve symptoms of anxiety. Adverse reactions common with BZDs include daytime sedation, ataxia, dizziness, and headaches.
