Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
Within a few hours of inhaling ricin mist, victims experience coughing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, nausea, and muscle aches. The airway may become severely inflamed and edematous and breathing can become extremely difficult. Management of poisoning with ricin is purely supportive. There is no antidote or chelating agent. Hemodialysis is not indicated.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Chelating agents interact with metals to form chelates, which then can be excreted from the body. Chelating agents can strip metals already bound and prevent the binding of metals to endogenous molecules. The chelates are less toxic and can be excreted safely.
