Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
Chemical arachnoiditis can occur with the liposomal formulation of cytarabine; dexamethasone is given to reduce the incidence and severity of this side effect. It is not used to prevent bone marrow suppression. It is not given to minimize hair loss or stomatitis. It does not reduce the incidence of pulmonary edema.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
Leucovorin is used to protect normal cells when large doses of methotrexate are given. Dexamethasone, folic acid, and vitamin B12 are not given concurrently with methotrexate.

Did you know?

About 80% of major fungal systemic infections are due to Candida albicans. Another form, Candida peritonitis, occurs most often in postoperative patients. A rare disease, Candida meningitis, may follow leukemia, kidney transplant, other immunosuppressed factors, or when suffering from Candida septicemia.

In most cases, kidneys can recover from almost complete loss of function, such as in acute kidney (renal) failure.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).

As the western states of America were settled, pioneers often had to drink rancid water from ponds and other sources. This often resulted in chronic diarrhea, causing many cases of dehydration and death that could have been avoided if clean water had been available.

Did you know?

Though Candida and Aspergillus species are the most common fungal pathogens causing invasive fungal disease in the immunocompromised, infections due to previously uncommon hyaline and dematiaceous filamentous fungi are occurring more often today. Rare fungal infections, once accurately diagnosed, may require surgical debridement, immunotherapy, and newer antifungals used singly or in combination with older antifungals, on a case-by-case basis.
