A patient is taking gentamicin (Garamycin) on once daily regimen. The prescriber orders a blood sample to be drawn for measurement of a trough level of the drug. When should the nurse draw the blood?

Samples for trough levels should be drawn just prior to the next dose (when divided daily doses are used) or 1 hour before the next dose (when a single daily dose is used).

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Neuromuscular blockade can be reversed with calcium. IV infusion of calcium salt (calcium gluconate) is the treatment of choice.
Epinephrine is not indicated for aminoglycoside toxicity; in fact, aminoglycoside toxicity is not apparent.
Decadron would not reverse the current condition.
Nothing indicates that the patient requires magnesium sulfate.
