Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Diabetes would pose the greatest risk of a cardiovascular event because of the damage to the endothelium of the vessels
Obesity would also be a risk factor, but not the greatest risk.
Hyperlipidemia would also be considered a risk factor, but not the greatest risk. Diabetes affects multiple systems in the body, including the vessels, heart, and kidneys.
Peripheral edema would not produce the greatest risk for a cardiovascular event.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Although all antihypertensive drugs are effective in older adults, only beta blockers and diuretics have been shown in controlled trials to reduce morbidity and mortality.
Clinical trials have proven only that beta blockers and diuretics decrease morbidity and mortality with older adults. Beta blockers are cardioprotective since they decrease heart rate and contractility. Thiazide diuretics tend to be effective with older adults as aantihypertensive agent.
Alpha1 blockers and alpha/beta blockers can cause orthostatic hypotension.
Centrally acting alpha2 blockers can impair cognitive function.

Certain triggers may cause a drug abuser to relapse. Research shows that long-term drug abuse results in significant changes in brain function that persist long after an individual stops using drugs. It is most important to realize that the same is true of not just illegal substances but alcohol and tobacco as well.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
