  2. check placement of the tube.
  3. take the vital signs.
  4. ask the patient if the tube is painful.

Make certain that the NG tube is in the stomach. Aspirate (take out) stomach contents with a sy-ringe, or inject (put in) 5 to 10 mL of air into the tube and listen for a gurgling sound in the ab-dominal area. This may be heard by placing a stethoscope over the stomach.
