Fever is the principal early sign of infection, which can have extremely serious implications for an immunosuppressed patient. Because of a lack of neutrophils as a result of chemotherapy, signs of infection may be masked. Lightly bleeding gums, nausea, and vomiting are to be expected in patients receiving chemotherapy. Diarrhea and stomatitis also are common in patients receiving chemotherapy.
