If injuries or infections do occur, the child should be seen by a primary care provider as soon as possible. There is no need to treat this as an emergency so the mother need not rush the child to the ER or call 911, but she should be encouraged to have the child seen today at the clinic. It would not be appropriate to give home care instructions until he has been seen at the clinic.
