These adverse effects may result from GI irritation caused by the agent, which may be somewhat alleviated if the drug is taken with food, or from a systemic reaction to the urinary tract irritation. The nurse would not tell the patient to stop taking the medication without a physician's order to do so nor would the nurse tell the patient to continue taking the medication on an empty stomach. Advising the patient to take the medication along with vitamin C would be of no benefit to the patient described in the question.

Edrophonium is administered to diagnose myasthenia gravis because administration of this drug will cause a marked increase in muscle strength within 30 minutes of administration if the patient has this disease. Edrophonium does not produce decreased adventitious breath sounds, decreased muscle spasms, or increased urinary output.
