The cane and the weaker leg work together with each step. The cane extends from the greater trochanter to the floor while the cane is held 6 inches (15 cm) from the foot. Allow approximately 15 to 30 degrees of elbow flexion. As weight is taken on by the hand and the affected leg is lifted off the floor, complete extension of the elbow is necessary.
