The sling should extend from shoulders to knees (hammock) to support the patient's body weight equally. Raise the bed to a high position with the mattress flat. This allows the nurse to use proper body mechanics. Elevate the head of the bed; this places the patient in sitting position. Close the check valve as soon as the patient is down and the straps can be released. If the valve is left open, the boom may continue to lower and injure the patient.
