Known as smart pumps, they are designed to serve as a final step in preventing errors that relate directly to administration of IV medications. They have built-in software programmed from health care pharmacy databases with unit-specific profiles.

A. When an elastic bandage is applied to an extremity, the bandage is started at the site farthest from the heart (distal) and proceeds toward the heart (proximal).
B. An elastic or gauze bandage can be used to secure a dressing. If incision/wound is to be covered by a bandage, it should be covered with a dressing to avoid soiling of bandage and irritation of wound.
C. With client in bed, elevation of dependent extremities for 15 minutes before elastic bandage application will enhance venous return.
D. Assess circumference of lower extremity before or shortly after client gets out of bed in the morning or after client has been in bed for at least 15 minutes.
