D. Client may not be able to concentrate on technique because of intense pain. Visual, hearing, cognitive, and motor impairments may make it difficult to concentrate on technique.
A. A number of nonpharmacological pain management therapies can be used successfully with children. Distraction and relaxation strategies work for all ages. The technique or device used will need to be suitable to the developmental level of the child.
B and C. Client states pain intensity is unchanged or escalating, or client is demonstrating nonverbal behaviors indicative of pain. Consider administering analgesics before technique.
