Using a wick at the stoma opening prevents the peristomal skin from becoming wet with urine during a pouching-change procedure. Position the patient in a semi-reclining position. Avoid soap when cleansing the area. In the immediate postoperative period, urinary stents extend out from the stoma. A surgeon places the stents to prevent stenosis of the ureters at the site where the ureters are attached to the conduit.
