Progestins inhibit pituitary release of LH, the hormone responsible for releasing an ovum from a follicle. Estrogens and progestins alter cervical mucus by making it thick and viscous, inhibiting sperm migration. Hormones also change the endometrial wall, impairing implantation of the fertilized ovum.
