For a binomial distribution with n = 50, and p = 0.4, does the normal distribution provide a reasonable approximation? Use the rule of thumb for normal approximation to the binomial distribution.

Question 2

For a binomial distribution with n = 600, and p = 0.1, does the normal distribution provide a reasonable approximation? Use the rule of thumb for normal approximation to the binomial distribution.

Answer to Question 1

Since np = 20 > 5 and nq = 30 > 5, the normal approximation to the binomial distribution is appropriate in this case.

Answer to Question 2

Since np = 60 > 5 and nq = 540 > 5, the normal approximation to the binomial distribution is appropriate in this case.
