When researchers compare treatments, they never know exactly how these treatments will perform if they were able to test the treatments in all people in their population of interest. They cannot test treatments in all people, which is why they have to select a sample that they hope is representative of their population of interest, and then use statistics to draw inferences from that sample to apply to the population. In the Monty Hall Problem or in games of chance when we know, for example, that there are 52 cards with exactly 13 cards of each suit, we can work out the exact probabilities of every combination, so that if we were to conduct the experiment an infinite number of times, we would know the ANSWER we would get. Most research is conducted when the true ANSWER is not known or cannot be worked out.

In this case, the probability of winning is  if you switch your selection to the cup that was not shown, and  if you stick with your original choice. The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate this surprising result.
