solo piano form (like ragtime)
developed out of the blues: form and harmony
driving left hand; ostinato (repeated pattern)
piano entertainment in bars, etc.
likely an adaptation of what blues singer-guitarists had been doing
popular in the late 1930s
major influence on rock n' roll of the 1950s
also influenced the jump style of the big bands of the 1930s, particularly in Kansas City
