Answer to Question 1

Necessity - there had been many failures with other people directing his work

He wanted to make sure that his music was presented as he had imagined it

He needed the money, often to help with the debt encountered in the production of his performances

Answer to Question 2

similar to a sacred opera with arias and recitatives; each concert was about one hour, and the series unfolded over five Sundays around the season of Advent
