Answer to Question 1

ANS: Kumiuta is a vocal form that is accompanied by koto. Texts are sung in
constant phrases lengths called dan. This form developed into a purely instrumental genre,
which is exemplified in Rokudan no shirabe.

ANS: Motives are developed through changes in tempo and by means of elaborate
ornamentation techniques such as tremolo, vibrato, and slides.
