ANSWER: Romantic opera (Italian and German) typically features larger-than-life characters that are untroubled by
mundane concerns or financial worries; they often conclude with the lovers eternally united, either in this
world or the next. During the second half of the century, a realistic opera developed that was more in tune
with social truths, and treats issues of everyday life in a realistic, even gritty, manner. The afflictions of the
lower classes in particular are presented for all to see and the ending is usually tragic
